Thank you for visiting my site. I offer counselling, psychotherapy & supervision. Like you, I have experienced life’s ups and downs so can offer a genuine, non-judgemental, safe space for you to explore any difficulties you may be experiencing. When we feel stuck, anxious, low, overwhelmed, afraid or confused it can be daunting to know what to do. Imagine what it would be like to have clarity and feel calm, empowered, safe and in control of your feelings. Are you ready to thrive and improve your situation? You are not alone, together we can achieve this. My specialisms are anxiety, low mood, loss/grief, trauma, self- belief, stress management, identity, relationships and children and young people.

Talking therapy or counselling can help you gain a better understanding to your thoughts and feelings. With clarity, your pathway forward may seem clearer, allowing positive change to happen. I encourage and empower individuals to take responsibility for their development within therapy.

I also offer spring to autumn walk and talk therapy in local country parks and woodland. We hold the session outside walking in a country park. Walk and talk or Ecotherapy can provide the space and energy that can’t be found in the therapy room. Research shows connecting with nature during the act of walking therapy is beneficial for mental health, alleviates symptoms and brings a larger capacity for joy, social connectedness and raises self esteem. I am a member of Ecopsychology network.

Anxiety is a condition where worry, fear, nervousness or panic can intrude into your everyday life; often resulting in physical symptoms such as a racing heart, sweaty palms, breathlessness and panic attacks. Anxiety can be mild or severe and can present after a challenging situation, illness or trauma. It can also creep up over a number a months or years. Anger often masks underling anxiety. Anxiety can present as:

Self -esteem is the product of all of the thoughts and feelings we have about ourselves. Self- esteem can change depending on how we think. Negative thinking can lead to low self -esteem. Living with low self esteem can lead to anxiety or depression.
Low Mood and Depression
Difficult or stressful life events and experiences can leave a feeling of sadness or low mood. A low mood that will not go away can be a sign of depression. Depression can vary between people, there are many reasons we can become depressed. Below are a few common signs of depression. Are you feeling:
  • Worthless
  • like life isn't worth living
  • Constantly anxious, tearful and worried

Loss can be experienced due to many different reasons including the death of a loved one, loss of health, ending of a relationship or redundancy from a job. Loss often brings feelings of overwhelming grief or anger, sadness and heart ache.
Sometimes we may experience a deeply distressing incident. Saturday appointments available

At every initial meeting I will ask about your sleep, your food intake and exercise. The reason for this is because our physical health can really impact on our mental health, as all of our systems are connected. Making small changes to your day to day physical health can really improve mood.

Sleep at regular times each day aim for 6-8 hours per night. Relax and wind down before bed by having a bath or listening to music. Sleep in a calm, dark space and avoid screens an hour before bed. If sleep is poor keep a sleep diary so we can look at this together.

Exercise has been proven to aid in improving wellbeing. It helps with low mood and can reduce anxiety. It also raises self esteem. As little as 20 min physical activity per day can make a difference. Perhaps try walking, swimming or cycling.

Improve your diet to raise your mood, this can help you think more clearly and give you more energy. If you have a stressy tummy through anxiety look after your gut heath, beans and fruit and veg are good for balancing this. Stay hydrated, eat your 5 vegetables a day. Eat regularly. Eat plenty of protein and healthy fats such as omega 3. Go steady with caffeine and energy drinks.

Be kind to yourself self care replenishes energy and is the foundation for connecting with yourself and others. It is powerful in reducing anxiety and can improve your mood. Do one positive thing today just because it makes you happy. Take a walk in nature to oxygenate your body. Write out your thoughts to gain clarity about what’s bothering you. Check in with your emotions: name them without judgement. Have a date with yourself: take time to do what you enjoy.

Anxiety can be useful to protect us from harm, anxiety acts as an alert system for potential danger and can prompt you when something needs your attention. However anxiety can become a problem when it takes over our lives when there is no real threat. This can result in panic attacks or physical symptoms such as a racing heart, sweating, fast shallow breathing, dizziness, confusion or a churning tummy to name a few. If this sounds familiar a good idea is too practice this breathing technique which soothes your parasympathetic nervous system and calms the body response by slowing down breathing and heart rate, decreasing tension and blood pressure so bringing the body and mind to a calmer state. It takes but 3 minutes. Try it and then practice daily so it becomes part of your day. Lay, sit or stand. Breath slowly in through your nose noticing the air filling your belly, don’t force it, just breathe in for a count of 5 and then out through your mouth for a count of 5. Let the air flow gently in and out without pausing or holding your breath ( if a count of 5 is tricky try 3 and work up to 5). Repeat for 3 min. (NHS 2019)
